The Safer Drivers Course teaches learner drivers under the age of 25 to establish and practice some of the safe driving skills that will help prepare them for driving solo. Once learner’s progress to their P1 licence they are much more likely to be involved in a car accident. This is, in part due to the risky driving behaviour that we all think of when we think of P plate drivers. The course aims to educated them about the dangers that can arise when they start driving unsupervised, and equip them with the knowledge and skills to help mitigate these risks.
The key elements included in the Safer Drivers Course include how to understand speed management, gap selection, hazard awareness, safe following distances, and how to keep driving safely when you get distracted. These skills can be utilised once driving unsupervised and can help improve a young driver’s ability to stay safe on their P’s.

The Safer Driver Course Consists of
- a 3-hour group lesson with other learners
- a 2-hour practical driving session in a vehicle with another learner.
To attend a course you need to:
- have a valid learner licence
- be under 25
- have completed at least 50 log book hours of on-road driving (excluding any 3 for 1 bonus hours), and
- have included night driving in some of those hours.
Module 1
Module 1 consists of a three hour lesson in a small group setting. A group consisting of 6-12 participants will learn about how new P plate drivers, recently driving unsupervised for the first time, are at a higher risk of being involved in a car accident. This is partly due to their increased participation in risky behaviour when driving. This theory session endeavours to educate them about low risk driving strategies that can help keep them safe on the road.
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of how to manage their speed appropriately. Select and maintain appropriate distances between themselves and other vehicles. Being aware of hazards that may be in the vicinity of your vehicle and how to deal with them. They will also learn how to maintain focus and continue to drive safely when faced with distractions. This last point is particularly relevant for young, inexperienced drivers.
This theory session takes place in a fun, educational setting where the students are encouraged to participate in the group discussions and activities.
Module 2
Module 2 is a practical, in car session. This session is limited to two students per one instructor to ensure all students get the opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge in to practice. The learner drivers get to practice their newly learned life saving skills and low-risk driving strategies in a vehicle with an experienced, qualified instructor. Think of this as a more advanced driving lesson.
